Respirator Medical Clearance
In 1998 OSHA passed the new 1910.134 Respiratory protection amendment. In short, your employees who are required to wear a respirator must have their masks fit-tested annually and pass regular medical exams in order to get respirator medical clearance.
If you choose Onsite Medical Service as your medical evaluation provider our typical procedures for respiratory medical clearance are as follows: Your employees complete a health questionnaire with specific questions dictated in the OSHA standard. Based on answers to these questions a follow-up examination may be required including medical testing. From experience testing thousands of employees for respirator clearance the medical exam of choice is the Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) for predicting an employee’s ability to work in a respirator safely. The employee may have other non-lung related health problems that could determine respirator clearance and these will be addressed in the health questionnaire, but the PFT test is the quickest, safest and most accurate test for determining lung function. We offer this test at a very low price and it doesn’t make sense to exclude this valuable information when we are on-site, not to mention the added quantifiable documentation if future litigation issues were to arise.
Complete confidentiality of employee test results are maintained at all times.
You can count on the medical clearance exam like the hearing test to be delivered efficiently and with minimal disruptions in your production schedule.
