Every year, countless workers are exposed to harmful airborne contaminants that can cause serious health problems. To protect workers from these dangers, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) passed the 1910.134 Respiratory Protection amendment in 1998. This amendment requires employers to annually provide their employees with Pulmonary Tests and Respirator Medical Clearances. Pulmonary Tests help identify potential respiratory hazards, while Respirator Medical Clearances ensure that employees can wear a respirator without experiencing any health problems. Bypassing either of these tests could put your employees at risk of serious health complications. As such, it is important to ensure that your employees are up-to-date on Pulmonary Tests and Respirator Medical Clearances.
If you choose Onsite Medical Service as your medical evaluation provider, our typical procedures for respiratory medical clearance are as follows: Your employees will complete a health questionnaire with specific questions dictated in the OSHA standard. Based on answers to these questions, a follow-up examination may be required, including medical testing. In our experience testing thousands of employees for respirator clearance, the medical exam of choice is the Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) for predicting an employee’s ability to work in a respirator safely. The PFT test is the quickest, safest, and most accurate test for determining lung function.
We offer this test at a very low price, and it doesn’t make sense to exclude this valuable information when we are onsite, not to mention the added quantifiable documentation if future litigation issues were to arise. The employee may have other non-lung-related health problems that could determine respirator clearance, and these will be addressed in the health questionnaire, but the PFT test is the best predictor of someone being able to work safely with a respirator. For these reasons, we strongly recommend that our clients take advantage of this testing opportunity.
The PFT is a simple and noninvasive test that measures how well the lungs function. It is highly accurate in determining whether or not an employee can safely wear a respirator. Therefore, we recommend that all employees working in a respirator environment undergo a PFT before starting work. Contact us today to learn more about our respiratory medical clearance services.
You can count on the medical clearance exam, like the mobile hearing test, to be delivered efficiently and with minimal disruptions in your production schedule. We understand that many companies are under strict confidentiality agreements with their employee, which is why we take every step to ensure that all test results are kept strictly confidential. The results of the test are confidential and only shared with the employer.
You can trust that your employees’ privacy will always be protected. Additionally, we now offer an online health questionnaire to evaluate your employees that wear respirators quickly.
